Kata means  pattern, routine, habits or way of doing things. It is about creating a fast “muscle memory”  (Systems 1 thinking) of how to take action instantaneously in situations without having to go through a slower logical procedure. A Kata is practiced over and over again and strives for perfection

Mike Rother in his book “Toyota Kata” talks of 2 main Katas – the Improvement Kata and the Coaching Kata. The Improvement Kata consists of 4 steps  –

1. Understand the direction

2. Grasp the current condition

3. Establish the next target condition

4. PDCA to the target condition

The Coaching Kata supports the Improvement Kata by focussing on learning, improving, and pointing in the right direction. The Coaching Kata itself primarily supports the fourth step of the Improvement Kata, PDCA toward the Target Condition.
